High blood pressure is very common. In fact, about 75 million adults worldwide have high blood pressure! Having a high blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood, contributing to the hardening of your arteries, and leading to heart disease or stroke. While most doctors prescribe medication, there are natural remedies for high blood pressure.

Losing Weight

Believe it or not, losing weight can help lower your high blood pressure because your blood pressure increases as your weight increases. You are at an especially higher risk if you carry a lot of weight around your waistline. Medical professionals state that men are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 40 inches, and women if their waist is more than 35 inches.

Reduce Sodium

Several foods include high levels of sodium, and those high levels of sodium contribute to high blood pressure. Lower your salt intake, avoid fast food, and make sure you read the labels on the food you’re consuming to find out how much sodium it contains.

Increase Potassium

According to Dr. Linda Van Horn, potassium-rich fruits and vegetables are important for anyone trying to lower their blood pressure. You can increase your potassium level by eating more sweet potatoes, bananas, cantaloupe, honeydew, raisins, and tomatoes. You can also do so by consuming orange juice.

Natural Supplement Intake

Many over-the-counter supplements can help lower your blood pressure. Flaxseed, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, helps protect against atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease by reducing serum cholesterol, also lowering blood pressure. Although it does come in over-the-counter capsule form, it is recommended to buy whole or ground flax seed for you to add it to your home-cooked meals. Also recommended is the intake of 30-50 grams of these seeds per day.

Fish oil is another supplement that helps with blood pressure. One of the main causes of an elevated blood pressure is inflammation in the arteries. Several studies have been done with fish oil proving it can help decrease the inflammation that causes elevated blood pressure. Consume 1,000-2,000 mg of fish oil per day for the best results.

Another supplement you can take to help lower your blood pressure naturally is magnesium. Magnesium helps relax your blood vessels, lowering your blood pressure. It is recommended to take 500 mg of magnesium daily.

Herbal Remedies

There are many other options if you prefer high blood pressure natural treatment over taking prescribed medications, including the addition of certain herbs to your food. Basil, for example, is an herb that has been shown to help lower blood pressure. Basil can added to soups, pasta, and salads. Many other herbs and spices have been studied and found to be beneficial to lowering blood pressure, including garlic, ginger, celery seed, French lavender, and black Cumin seeds.
